For Asgard, Ron Frenz!

Nothing makes me pine for the winter weather like a good Asgard story. All these glorious Vikings, Valkyries, and Frost Giants fighting… So cool. And for about a six year period, Ron Frenz did it better than almost anyone.

He had big shoes to fill. Saying that is about as much of an understatement as it can get. Sal Buscema did a one year run, but before that was the even present shadow of writer/artist Walt Simonson, who’s run still stands as the best on THOR. But Frenz put forth an effort that did not fall short, and though some of the stories felt dense (honestly, most Thor books of the day had this problem. can’t fault the artist) the pace and ability to just jam the pages with action was brilliant.

His style echoed of the greats like Steve Ditko and even moreso, the great Jack Kirby. Outside of George Perez, no one knew how to fill the page quite like Ron Frenz in the 1980′s, and with style like that, you know you’re doing pretty dang good.

That’s all for my original art bender. I think I got it out of my system for today.

Putting the US back in U.S.A.

A Norse God, an Alcoholic, an Eastern European Mutant, and a 93 year old from Brooklyn walk onto an alien collective brain. What do they do?

Well, they throw up the American flag and start killing alien soldiers, der! A great Mike Zeck piece where you get to see a Romita influence in his pencils – I haven’t come across much of his work in an unfinished form and you can really see that style here, especially on the Kree soldiers in the foreground. If I was the type to have $900 to throw around, I would probably scoop this up. Has anyone seen a color version of this piece?

Thor a la Carte

Here’s a fun idea. Ever want to buy a sketch from your favorite creator, but just couldn’t make it to a con to hassle the shit out of him/her over the details of said sketch? Now you can nitpick famous artists from the comfort of your home! Steve Rude, brilliant dude, is selling sketches on Ebay. Nothing new about an artist plying his wares online, but what makes this cool is he’s showing the base drawing now and offering you options on how you’d like it to look. It’s like you’re right there with him to remind him that Wonder Woman’s panties are a deeper blue, just in case he forgets.

Here’s the initial auction.

And here’s your options for UPGRADING:
BLACK AND WHITE MARKER: (INCLUDED)
COLOR MARKER: +$100
INDIA INK: +$150
INDIA INK W/COLOR MARKER: +$250
INDIA INK W/WATERCOLOR +$500

Here’s an idea of the process as demonstrated by a separate auction Steve held.

Personally, I’d opt for the watercolors if I had the money. Steve is capable of some really beautiful work and he’s one of the few artists I’d be willing to lose rent money for. This is a cool type of auction because it probably shaves a couple bucks off the sketch price due to Steve picking the subject, but also allows for a commission level of customization. Also, some people are afraid to ask artists questions via email for fear of looking stupid or overstepping their bounds. Here, Steve lays out your options.

Top 100 Summer Comics #52

I’ve been thin on the posts this week, been crazy. But let me be brief on this one because I truly believe there’s not a whole lot that needs to be said.

Especially with everyone buzzing about the THOR movie trailer, this is an issue that needs a mere three content comments to sell it.

John Byrne.

Avengers vs. Loki.

And the spoiler – It ends with THOR SEALING LOKI IN THE EARTH.

#52 – Avengers West Coast 55

Nuff Said.

Ain’t No Fun Waiting’ Round To Be A Millionaire.

Especially when you look up comic book auctions on eBay all day long and get to watch auctions like these that you know are going to bring in some serious bank for both the seller and the buyer.

This first auction is only at $76 right now, but given the spectacular condition, and the fact that there’s still 6 days to go, it’s guaranteed to skyrocket…

This second one especially makes my eyes turn green and the drool start leaking from my mouth. Amazing Spider Man #2-50, sold as a lot. Good God do I wish I could get in on that high bidding action.

Top 100 Summer Comics… #88

Thor should be the next big thing.

Weird to say, but all the elements are there. Big movie coming out next year, so you know how all the kids (both teen-bop and romper room crowds alike) have been running in Iron Man shirts? Well look forward to the original goldie-locks of norse mythology to get the same treatment.

And how cool would it be if they gave us a real Ragnarok of a movie with a Lord of the Rings meets Marvel-verse treatment of Thor? It would be HUGE.

#88 – Thor #401

A quick, easy and classic one off of Loki’s chicanery. A wager is made and that always makes for a good read when it comes to the Gods. If there’s one thing immortals with binge drinking tendencies love, it’s a wager. Issue still resonates 1) because it’s issue #401 and it came out in the 80′s, so chew on that… and 2) because it was a damn fun read after a lonnnggg (and well done but complex) storyline had come to completion at issue 400. So hats off to this issue – another in the line of “a great issue to read to give to someone who doesn’t ‘GET’ (fill in your favorite superhero here).”

These Last Dayz

Thor has had many dark days. Ragnarok comes to mind.

But there were perhaps none darker than the days of…

THE THOR CORPS.

Yeah. Eric Masterson era Thor (aka Thunderstrike) sucked. I bet I could read it with some sentimental attachment, but overall it was rough. He wasn’t even likable. His existence robbed us from a real THOR v. THANOS w/ Infinity Gauntlet battle. That would have been cool.

Beta Ray Bill? He’s cool. No complaints. He’s a horse faced alien with a mystical hammer. Feelin’ it.

Dargo Ktor aka Nuevo Thor? Yeah. About that…

I would high five anyone brave enough to have this poster hanging in their house.

Cold Lampin’

After a month away, I returned to my apartment to face the awful truth that I live in a hovel suitable only for troglodytes and mole people. This is the sort of clarity you only get from stepping away from something long enough to take it in anew. The apartment isn’t beyond salvage though. I just need new rugs, a new shower curtain, and NEW LAMPS.

Batman is lameass and the Batcave looks like an adobe, but this might look nice on my desk.

We can get into how putting this in your livingroom ensures you’ll never be with a woman again, but why bother? This thing rules and who needs women when I have the son of Odin?

Wonder Woman lava lamp. Nuff Said.

I always felt that The Thing should have a self-illuminating head. Thank God someone took the time to craft my fantasy into a concrete reality.

Back When Marvel Let Interns Design Promos

Here’s a total win. Walt Simonson art paired with the sort of graphic design you might find on a bottle of Chinese shampoo. This is all very 1985 and it’s hard not to love it. Now, if you could locate Walt in his cinderblock and sheet-metal shack somewhere deep in a mountain range peppered with anti-personal devices* and get him to sign this thing- that would bring this to a new level. Good luck.

*Note: I have no evidence that Walt lives in a Unibomber-style lair, I just presume that of anyone who doesn’t make themselves available on the Internet. Look into getting a website, Walt.

#200

We recently passed 200 posts.

Pretty decent. 300 is going to come a lot faster. Promise.

But seeing as how most comic series don’t make it to 200, I figured it was worth celebrating with some #200 covers.  For some reason, #100 seems like a bigger deal than #200, as if making it 100 issues is hard, but that making it to #200 should just happen. Weird.

Daredevil #200

Superman #200

Thor #200

The Incredible Hulk #200

Batman #200

Amazing Spider-Man #200

Justice League of America #200

Thank you for reading. Help spread the word if you dig what we are doing.
