THANOS IS AN ATM

Here’s where hype goes: An unremarkable first appearance comic (in this case The Invincible Iron Man issue 55) that can have its price jacked up to coincide with a hit movie (Thanos is in the credit tag at the end of Avengers… in case you’re one of the three human beings on the planet who haven’t seen it yet).

Am I angry? No. The boom is short-lived but can be good for comics overall because at least people are buying comics, even if it’s for silly reasons. And there are far worse first appearances you could be spending money on. Also, I love this seller’s approach. He includes a weirdly personal note in the sale that includes information no one really needs. He starts with “Hey guys” which I think is very un-Thanos of him.

THANOS WEEK ROLLS ON

Thanos week is going to be Thanos Two-Weeks.

Memorial Day is for families, so I give you the mad demi-god in family-friendly form. Here’s a Mighty Muggs version of our favorite purple death-lover. Suitable for children. We’ll return to our normal program of Thanos as a pan-genocidal madman tomorrow.

THANOS WEEK DAY TWO

Thanos Week, our parallel to Shark Week, continues with this odd find. There’s nothing particularly out of the ordinary about a copy of Marvel Two-In-One, even if it’s an annual. So why so pricey?

Could it be the appearance of a certain moon-dwelling death-obsessed space weirdo? Could have something to do with a prune-faced demi-god? I think so.

THANOS Week Starts Now!

With The Avengers film in theaters and the very sexy post-credit scene promising a Thanos appearance in the next installment, copies of The Infinity Gauntlet are going up in price by the day. Everyone who doesn’t know, wants to know. Everyone who already knows, wants to experience the joy of Thanos all over again.

For people of a certain age, Thanos is the king. He’s the top of the comic crossover mountain. Secret Wars gets credit for somehow being engaging despite the dumbest premise of all time, but The Infinity Gauntlet was actually good.

We’ve all acted stupid for a girl, right? Imagine how stupid you get when that girl is the personification of death. Thanos is just a fool in love.

We’ll build up to the gauntlet. In the meantime, check this Thanos appearance in Warlock written by Marv Wolfman and pencilled by Jim Starlin. Whoa.

Top 100 Summer Comics #8

For whatever reasons, I always liked the Silver Surfer. His vibe is cool, his job is cool… and even his real name, Norrin Radd, is cool.

#8 – Silver Surfer 50

Here we get a little look at his (cool named) planet, Zenn-La. A little look at his history, featuring father Jartran Radd and girlfriend Shalla-Bal. And… Thanos taunts him with all of this. A good anniversary issue, and Ron Lim and Jim Starlin do a smashup job, as always.

Infinity Gauntlet, the poster

Thanos. Adam Warlock. Gamora. Nebula. Silver Surfer.

And one of my favorite Captain America scenes.

That’s right woodchuck chuckers – it’s the Infinity Gauntlet. Unlike it’s sequel and trequel… this miniseries ruled. It was the first major stand alone series post Secret Wars, as crossover events such as Inferno and Acts of Vengeance didn’t have any stand alone issues. The ‘Gauntlet jumped off the stands at me from the first issue, the cover just a magnificent and dark piece that made me go… wha??

And it just so happens here’s a banger of a poster that replicates that very cover. So cool. Up until this point in my life, I didn’t know what the infinity gems were. Life has been made THAT much better because of this knowledge. Thanks, Jim Starlin and George Perez.
