My Earliest Comic Memory.

It was the winter of 1986. I had just come home from the third grade, and for some reason that I do not remember, I was not wearing my winter hat. For another some reason that I also do not remember, this was A BIG DEAL. If there was one rule for winter weather wear coming to and from school, it was to have my hat on. But I did not. And my dad saw me coming up the drive without it, and so when I came in I was promptly punished. How was I punished? I was punished by not getting the three He-man comics he had bought for me that afternoon until I finished writing “I will wear my hat when I’m outside” (or something like that) somewhere from 30-100 times. My dad was pretty big on making me write lines as a punishment when I was a wee lad. But, the point is, these are the first three comics that I can remember reading. Just don’t ask me to tell you what happened in them; I’ll be damned if I can remember details outside of the Meteorbs being in one of the issues (which turned out to be issue 2).

Madballs back, so just beware…

Remember Star Comics? Marvel’s kiddie comics line? Featuring such licensed notables as the Muppet Babies, The Getalong Gang, Heathcliff…

And Madballs.

Yes, Marvel made a kiddie comic featuring the Garbage Pail Kids of balls, to be sold side by side with the Care Bears and Top Dog. Which inevitably led to gems like this:

I’m sure hilarity ensued. Def not the coolest comics ever. Actual Madballs tho, those were pretty cool.

I’m not gonna lie to you, I wouldn’t mind owning a mint on card Crack Head (later renamed Bash Brain, for obvious reasons), one of which is available in the above auction. And a $125 BIN is pretty good, considering there are mint on card Madballs being sold right now for prices ranging from $55 to $70* (the Head Popping Madballs especially have high prices**). I don’t really want all the decaying loose balls being sold with it tho, as I have my own decaying Madball to look after: a Screamin’ Meemi my dad had bought back in the 80s for “artistic reference”. I think it was the only one he could stand, due to it being the least gross (grossness being the stated reason for my not being allowed to get any). Meemi is now missing a large part of his nose and tongue, and resides on my bookshelf, along with some of the better ones from the 00’s revival.

The revival designs were pretty hit and miss for me. Repvile looks neither reptile nor vile. The redone Screamin’ Meemi looks awful. And why are Bash Brain and Wolf Breath red? Series three promised to include a revamp of Lock Lips, one of my favorite original 2nd series Madballs, and a new one called “Mosh Pitts”, but sadly, it has yet to surface. Ah well. Maybe I’ll just score a plastic Madballs soda cup instead.

(How awesome is the package art on the Head Popping Madballs? Seriously, so cool.)
