Bumout Of The Month.

One of the joys of rearranging my bookshelf is making reveling in my collection of hardcover collections. In particular the EC Archives. Of course, doing so then reminds me that my collection is nowhere near complete. Which always bums me out.

Naturally, this leads to me digging around to find out just when the next batch is coming out. So imagine my chagrin to find this message posted on the Gemstone site for the EC Archives:

“At this time, no final decision has been made regarding The EC Archives or our comic books featuring Disney’s standard characters, but it seems certain that both lines will continue in some form,” he said. “We all anticipate resolving the issues facing us and moving forward, and I will be happy to announce the specifics once things have been finalized.”

That’s right; due to the economy, the EC Archives are on indefinite hold, and have been since 2009. So not only are none of the lines completed, but they never even got to start any of The Haunt Of Fear, which means for now our only option for a nice hc collection is the old Russ Cochran slipcase sets, which is a bum out all on it’s own, for two reasons:

Reason 1: They’re in black and white, not color, which at the time was ok since the original comics wouldn’t have reprinted as nicely, but technology has since caught up and the high quality color of the newer hardcovers has spoiled me.
Reason 2: They’ve been out of print for so long, they’re beau-coup expensive. That’s the real sticking point for me, honestly. I did once find the full slip cased set of Crime Suspenstories in a used book store in Brooklyn, but the condition was abysmal and at the time I didn’t realize how much these go for.

Bum outs everywhere, I swear.

edit: Actually, now that I think about it, you can find some pretty good deals on the slip cased editions. Case in point:

A $125 start bid = the jacket price of 2 and a half of the new color editions. For 5 volumes with a slip case, that’s actually pretty good. Assuming no one bids the price up. That would be a bum out.
