Those Who Forget The Past…

Remember in the 1960s, when DC Comics thought THIS was a good idea?

No sexist star spangled bathing suit, no convoluted background… just a modern take on an iconic character. Remember how well that went? Even Gloria Steinem wanted the original version back.

Well, this is Wonder Woman issue 600:

What makes this issue notable, aside from it being a milestone 600th issue?

Why a modern take on an iconic character, with a less convoluted background and a new non-revealing, non-star spangled costume of course

Yeah. As the good folks over at Topless Robot put it, Jim Lee’s stuck in the 90s design makes it look like Wonder Woman has decided to cosplay as 90s Superboy.

All she needs are the John Lennon sunglasses.

Thumbs down from me. It sounds like JMS may have some cool ideas about new villains, but I can’t say I’m interested in a Wonder Woman who was raised in an urban setting, and I REALLY don’t give a flying hoot where my superheroes keep their car keys, know what I’m saying?

The Swan and The Croc.

The Lion and the Unicorn.

The Fox and the Crow.

And then there’s the Swan and the Croc. Curt and Killer, respectively.

Always been a fan of Curt Swan and the original gangster style Killer Croc. Both top notch pre-Crisis entities. To me Curt Swan is THE artist for Superman, in the same way Christopher Reeves is THE actor for him, know what I mean. And remember all that stuff Bane did during Knightfall? Unleashing all the Bat-villains on Batman, taking over the underworld, breaking Batman’s back? Guess who had that idea first. Yeah, pre-Crisis, pre-sewer monster Croc.

Sometimes I really hate the Crisis.

You Won’t.

You won’t spend the $60 plus shipping to buy both of these:

And then spend $25 plus shipping on these…

…so you can USE them to color both the coloring books AND the cards that came with them.

You won’t.

This Would Look Pretty Good In A Frame.

Just my opinion.

It’s an acetate (or maybe a lot of acetates? The description makes it hard to tell), but there’s no reason why it still won’t look nice once it’s properly matted and framed.

I Want My Mummy.

Or in this case, mummies.

4 Mummies to be precise.

Too bad it’s not May, this would have made a great Mother’s Day post… ah well.

Ain’t No Fun Waiting’ Round To Be A Millionaire.

Especially when you look up comic book auctions on eBay all day long and get to watch auctions like these that you know are going to bring in some serious bank for both the seller and the buyer.

This first auction is only at $76 right now, but given the spectacular condition, and the fact that there’s still 6 days to go, it’s guaranteed to skyrocket…

This second one especially makes my eyes turn green and the drool start leaking from my mouth. Amazing Spider Man #2-50, sold as a lot. Good God do I wish I could get in on that high bidding action.

Plastic Man.

Talk about a character with unlimited toy potential. Even going back to the Super Powers line of the mid-80s, he was one of the coolest around. Sure, it was just a stretching neck, but when the rest of the line could only kick and punch, it makes for a coveted figure.

Heck, you can even go PAST the 80s, and into the late 70s:

That’s right, a Stretch Armstrong style Plas. Of course, these days there’s almost no way anyone could afford one, let alone risk trying to stretch him; it is 2010 after all. Fortunately, action figure accessories have caught with the variety of changes ol’ Plas can make, which leads us to exceptional toys like this San Diego Comic Con exclusive:

This one’s just in the pre-order stages right now, but man, just look at what you can do with this guy:

Definitely a cool, cool toy version of a cool, cool character.

Mego-mania.

I never really got into Megos. I’m pretty sure I had a Hulk, a Spiderman, and a Spider-mobile as a little tyke, but that’s really it. I guess I came along just a smidge too late for them.

But some people really dig em. They’re very collectible.

Case in point. Under a day left, already over a hundred bucks. Or take a look at this guy:

Mint in package Mego Thor. 7 bids, $430 bucks, a hair under a day to go. Heck, even a line of generic Cavemen Megos is up to over $300…

So yeah. Clearly I missed out on something.

Did I Miss A Random Comic Book Friday?

I do believe I did. Sorry about that, I got this new toy called an iPad and was busy playing with the Marvel and DC apps for most of last week… they’re pretty sweet, I’ve gotta say. Anyways, to make up for it, here are not 2, but THREE random comics (well, 2 comics and one comic strip):

Ok, wait, really? $19.99 BIN for issue 12 of the latest volume of New Mutants? At first my mind was kind of blown, but then I checked into it and saw that yes, many copies of this issue have gone in the 15-20 dollar range (the David Finch varient gets into the upper 20s/30 dollar range). And there are other copies up with BIN’s in the $35-50 range, so hey, this is actually a bargain.

Love That Joker…

This hung in various spots in my bedroom for most of my youth. At one point, it even was on the ceiling above my bed. I know that sounds weird, but I had A LOT of stuff hanging on my walls.

I wish I knew what happened to it, I really don’t think I would have thrown it out. But I guess I did… sadly. And much as I loved it, there’s no way I’m paying 49.99 plus shipping to replace it.

But one signed by the man himself on the other hand…

The “make an offer” feature is in play, so even though it’s ten times as expensive, I could always try to haggle…
