Warning: Do not use on Kryptonite dishware

Sometimes the seller says plenty. I like these, that’s the Superman I know and love (no poor substitutes here) and was considering them just for the novelty, until…

THEY ALL HAVE  A MOTHBALL SMELL AND  I DID NOT WASH THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE NEW.   MOTHBALL SMELLS WILL COME OUT OF CLOTHES BY SOAKING THEM IN OXY CLEAN AND THEN WASHING THEM.

I’ve got a question…

Who is this ATOM MAN? I’m not gonna lie, he seems pretty… canny?

Love the poster though. Something perfect about some of the pre-1950s Superman movie posters. That “larger than life” feel is tangible in the image. Gotta love it.

Answer: Atom Man is Lex Luthor in disguise. Better question – anyone seen this?

SUPER SMUT

AWUUUUUGGAAAAAAAHHHHH AWWWWUUUUUGGGAAAAAHHHHH! Sound the alarm! It’s that time again! Monday is the day we demonstrate The Dark Underbelly of Original art! This edition is dedicated to one of the few characters who make She-Hulk seem relevant: SUPERGIRL.

What do we know about Claudio Aboy? Breasts. That’s it. Dude loves to draw chests. Google him. Breasts appear. Here’s his take on Supergirl. I would actually read her book (maybe, probably not) if she looked like this.

I REALLY enjoy the subtext to this one.

I know I probably come off dismissive and condescending when it comes to these artists, but understand it’s just for laughs. I actually admire what they do. Some more than others. Devon Massey I admire a lot. In the world of exaggerated cartoon tits, he’s a titan. Something about his mammaries just rings truer than similar work from his peers. You be the judge.

What do I know about artist Sanna U? Absolutely nothing, EXCEPT for the fact that she is this week’s winner for Best in Show, Most Tasteful Depiction, AND Most Realistic Anatomy. We at Comicnoize’s Dark Underbelly of Original Art Monday salute Sanna U and her efforts to bring unprecedented levels of photorealism to comics.

Who’s your favorite DC character/s?

If I was asked this question a million times, I would always answer the same.

The Metal Men.

Must be on a Byrne kick, but damn. This era of Superman was pretty damn good too. But The Metal Men… especially here, this was the one time where I regularly followed and read every Superman comic. And of that two year or so stretch, the Metal Men issues stand out.

The Timmverse You Never Knew

You may know Bruce Timm from his work on a multitude of television projects, including the much-loved Batman: The Animated Series. People are so into this dude that fans call his body of work in animation “The Timmverse” and consider it the creme de la creme of the DCAU (DC Animated Universe, bro).

I don’t get into much animation, or television, or film beyond the “too lazy to change the channel” zone. But I can recognize Timm’s work. That means he’s big. Also, I can recognize a superfreak with a brain full of kink. The following auctions prove Timm isn’t just about Bat-gadgets. Dude knows where the party’s at.

This one has a sexual-assault underpinning so I’m gonna refrain from saying this piece turns me on, but that’s a pretty girl, right?

Ok, now it’s getting clearer. This dude has DEFINITELY seen a naked lady before.

Proof positive. He’s a nasty dude. 8 pages of this sketchbook devoted to nudes. We know he wanted to do more but figured they might move his table to the basement next year at SDCC if he did.

Timm Bruce: Approved! I’m gonna start watching DCAU in the hopes of a Harley Quinn nip-slip.

Chase.

I think we all know by now that I am really into the… shall we say, espionage and political intrigue side of the DC Universe. Suicide Squad, Checkmate, Manhunter… those are my jams, so to speak. So it’s only natural that at one point, I picked up a run of Chase.

The basic gist of it is that Chase is a super hero despising agent for the DEO, which is basically the DCU’s superhero/villain watchdog group. She’s one of the proverbial watchers of the watchmen, with the twist being that Chase herself is the child of a murdered super hero and has her own super power. As such she does things like try to figure out Batman’s secret identity and accompany the Suicide Squad on a mission. Sounds awesome right?

Well honestly it’s actually a little more “meh”. The plotting is fine, and the concept is solid, but the layouts and artwork are really hard to deal with, as they mix up normal comic art with lots of printed word snippets that are meant to demonstrate things like computer transcripts, which often get so wordy that it honestly becomes boring. One of the reasons I couldn’t stand that Morrison written Batman issue that was 90% written word is because if I want to read a book, I’ll read a book, know what I’m saying? The Teen Titans issue and the ones featuring Chase’s apparently homeless (?) private eye friend fall flat, and the fact that the last issue ended up being one of those obnoxious 1,000,000 tie ins is hardly the type of closure you want to have, especially in one that was only just getting rolling.

That being said, Chase is still worth a read, especially because she pops back up later on down the line as a supporting character in the excellent 00′s version of Manhunter (where they tie up some of the loose ends regarding Chase and her family history). The Suicide Squad and Batman issues are the stand outs, as mentioned.

Worth a look, especially for cheap.

YES!!! MORE SLURPEE CUPS!

I can never get enough of these 7-11 Marvel and DC Slurpee cups from the 1970′s. It helps that I’m a big fan of the Slurpee as a summer time beverage as well. And it looks like this time, we’ve hit the mother lode…

(Is that MIRROR MASTER~!?!?)

I feel like that these four auctions might constitute a complete run of single character cups. Don’t ask me why… even if it isn’t, thanks to chapman207 for making my day!

Tempus Fugitive.

Tempus Fugitive was one of many comic books I got as a kid from various classmates who had hand me down comics they didn’t actually want to read. It was also one of the few that I got all the issues of. So it’s kind of weird to find that, once I started writing this, I realized I didn’t remember all that much about it

I remember that it was a time travel comic, and that I always thought Ken Steacy’s art was pretty cool, but it’s been so long since I’ve actually read it that I’m at a loss for details. I’m pretty sure at one point some Mad Max types had the hero tied to 4 jets in an attempt to dismember him, but that’s all I’ve got.

DC put it out originally, but for some reason Dark Horse put out the trade.

I Feel Like the Last Boy on Earth

Let’s put it out there. I’m a Marvel guy. There are dudes on Comic Noize who are DC men and there are dudes who walk a middle path. But I make mine Marvel. That doesn’t mean I don’t know DC at all, but it makes me much more of a “greatest hits” fan. So I’ll be straight up- who the hell is Kamandi? I mean BESIDES the last boy on Earth? Who is he really?

Apparently this book started as Jack Kirby’s effort to hit all the same buttons as Planet of the Apes, but eventually became its own thing and, like all DC characters, fails to make sense to me after the 80′s. Continue reading »
