Is Deadman the All-Time Best DC Character?

In answer to this post’s headline: Yes. No question. Deadman is awesome. He’s the only DC character I’ll read without being prompted. Simple idea; character anyone can relate to; cool costume. How’s that for a magic formula?

Neal Adams is as influential as Jack Kirby when we’re talking about the impact he had on artists. Did he leave as big a mark on pop-culture? No, but that’s virtually impossible so let’s cut him some slack. What he did he did better than anyone and everyone since then has scrambled to stand in his shadow. THERE ARE SPLASHPAGES OF HIS CAPABLE OF MAKING YOU DIZZY. THINK ABOUT THAT. IT’S A STILL IMAGE. THERE IS ONLY IMPLIED MOVEMENT, YET IT STILL MAKES YOU WOOZY. CRAZY. The work he did with the Deadman character reminds even the most jaded comic reader that there have always been men and women willing to up the artistic ante.

Here’s something you can’t afford.

And here’s something you can afford. Do it.

Six Inch Man of Plastic

If I received this toy for Christmas I would put on a facade of joyfulness so my parents didn’t feel that they couldn’t provide. But in my heart I would be bummed. I mean, what is it? Superman spits water? Is that something he did often in comics in the 60s? Maybe a couple times to stop a fire or something, but is that really the angle you want to come at when playing with your friends? Pretending they’re on fire?

Plate Tectonics

What we’re looking at here is a commemorative Green Lantern/Green Arrow plate. This collectable celebrates the groundbreaking 70s series featuring these two characters fighting social ills. It’s exactly what it looks like. A plate. The art is by Alex Ross (as is the case with seemingly all “collectables”) and the trim is “gold”. Not microwave-safe and possibly unsafe to eat off of at all; it belongs in the display case with your other commemorative plates.

But there is more than just a plate here. There’s a lesson. The lesson is how not to list an ebay auction. The first of the two images below is swiped from a collectable site I found on the internet. The second is the image that ran with the auction. Notice the difference? One might help you sell something, the other could only be used as an eye-chart. Please, Ebay sellers, use images that don’t require magnifying glasses.

YOU ARE WILD DOG, BRO!

So after much research (one Google search) I come to learn my childhood memory of the Mad Dog comic book was actually Wild Dog. From what little I’ve gleaned about WD from the one issue I read 20 years ago and the glance I took at a wikipedia entry, it seems Wild Dog was part of the Big Two’s 80s effort to get gritty without getting gritty. Punisher and the like. Thing is, I LOVE that stuff. If you don’t beat me to this auction, I may pick these four issues up. Take me to a world where all crime can be stamped out by one dude with an Uzi.

Check out issue four. Cover goes from “THIS IS WILD DOG” to “YOU ARE WILD DOG” with WD handing his mask off. Very cute.

The Halodeck is Even Cooler Than You Think

I’ve failed to post the last few days but I’m confident that once you hear why, all will be forgiven.

How much do you know about porn? The business of it, I mean. Well, for the uninitiated, the porn industry is seeing the same drop in sales due to pirating that music and comics are. Maybe worse. So in an effort to make products with ample crossover to the mainstream and induce a collector’s market, they’ve banked on parody. Parody porn, as you might have guessed, takes properties you’re familiar with and gives them an adult spin. Some are done well (seriously) and others are poorly made turds. Just like mainstream movies.

So what does this have to do with me? Well, I’m on the set of a Star Trek the Next Generation parody at the moment. And it rules. The set looks nearly as good as mainstream sets I’ve been on and the talent is more interesting than any mainstream film I’ve seen in a long minute. That’s why I haven’t given you any auctions to check out the past few days. I hope you forgive me. Back to normal (sigh) tomorrow. In the meantime, hit this auction and study up.

Interesting concepts aren’t always well executed…

No idea when this shirt came out. The print would suggest it’s a more modern design, but the whole style… no clue. Well, here you go. Either the best or the wort Flash shirt ever.

I almost feel like someone had a poorly tie-dyed blue shirt, and some blazed out design dude with way too much authority saw it, murmured “hu-huh, hu-huh” and came out with this. C’mon DC.

And this is why there won’t be a successful FLASH movie anytime soon…

Saga of the Soft Cover.

You’d think a hardcover collection of Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing would be a no brainer.

Sad to say, however, these are not all that good. Instead of good quality pages that bring out the nuances of Stephen Bissette’s pencils and John Totleben’s inks, we get paper pages more akin to that of the old news stand comics. And while there is something to be said for that, I think most fans were expecting something that was a better quality than the paper pages of the softcovers, not pages of a lesser quality. And the dust jackets are fragile and waxy; I actually had to take it off in order to read it. fortunately, this was changed with the second and third volumes, though the page quality stayed the same. So for now, I’m sticking with my beat up old softcovers…

The Flash. Why Not?

There is no Marvel character that captures the vibe of one of DC’s finest, The Flash. Spider-Man comes close, but not quite there. Wally West (my personal favorite Flash) somehow became the heart of gold, even when standing next to other icons like Superman – he was the standout ‘right is right’ of the team. He also was quirky as hell and had so many good villains it just made him all the better. So for your viewing pleasure…

And just in case you needed a misshapen homage of the USA behind the Flash, here’s a classy poster. DC geography is very confusing, so maybe this map makes sense.

DC Love.

As an unapologetic Marvel zombie, it’s hard to say this. But DC is responsible for some pretty cool comics. And here’s two posters that embody that DC cool. Superman done right is awesome – it’s sad that it’s become such a rare reading experience to enjoy a Superman book.

And despite the back and forth Watchmen love/hate surrounding the movie, this poster is almost completely undeniable.

Warning: Do not use on Kryptonite dishware

Sometimes the seller says plenty. I like these, that’s the Superman I know and love (no poor substitutes here) and was considering them just for the novelty, until…

THEY ALL HAVE  A MOTHBALL SMELL AND  I DID NOT WASH THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE NEW.   MOTHBALL SMELLS WILL COME OUT OF CLOTHES BY SOAKING THEM IN OXY CLEAN AND THEN WASHING THEM.
