Those Who Forget The Past…

Remember in the 1960s, when DC Comics thought THIS was a good idea?

No sexist star spangled bathing suit, no convoluted background… just a modern take on an iconic character. Remember how well that went? Even Gloria Steinem wanted the original version back.

Well, this is Wonder Woman issue 600:

What makes this issue notable, aside from it being a milestone 600th issue?

Why a modern take on an iconic character, with a less convoluted background and a new non-revealing, non-star spangled costume of course

Yeah. As the good folks over at Topless Robot put it, Jim Lee’s stuck in the 90s design makes it look like Wonder Woman has decided to cosplay as 90s Superboy.

All she needs are the John Lennon sunglasses.

Thumbs down from me. It sounds like JMS may have some cool ideas about new villains, but I can’t say I’m interested in a Wonder Woman who was raised in an urban setting, and I REALLY don’t give a flying hoot where my superheroes keep their car keys, know what I’m saying?

The Swan and The Croc.

The Lion and the Unicorn.

The Fox and the Crow.

And then there’s the Swan and the Croc. Curt and Killer, respectively.

Always been a fan of Curt Swan and the original gangster style Killer Croc. Both top notch pre-Crisis entities. To me Curt Swan is THE artist for Superman, in the same way Christopher Reeves is THE actor for him, know what I mean. And remember all that stuff Bane did during Knightfall? Unleashing all the Bat-villains on Batman, taking over the underworld, breaking Batman’s back? Guess who had that idea first. Yeah, pre-Crisis, pre-sewer monster Croc.

Sometimes I really hate the Crisis.

You Won’t.

You won’t spend the $60 plus shipping to buy both of these:

And then spend $25 plus shipping on these…

…so you can USE them to color both the coloring books AND the cards that came with them.

You won’t.

Superman #75 And My Dad

If you were reading comic books back in the early 90s, you know the hype that surrounded the Death of Superman. It was unmistakable. It was everywhere. You couldn’t turn the tv on without hearing about it. In fact, it was so big, that when the issue dropped, my dad stopped at the LCS and picked up a copy for myself AND one for my older brother. Now this was HUGE. My dad was never big on comic books. He thought kids should be outside throwing a ball or exploring the woods. To some extent, I can agree with that. But my older brother and I were a lot more cerebral than our dad. Not sure how. We got his caring personality but not his sporting abilities — this was a guy who played varsity football and took a few high school trips in the late 60s to the Swiss Alps to ski on what was essentially wooden planks. My brother and I both sucked at baseball, didn’t have a football team and were overall uncoordinated. Where my dad got booted from his private school for skipping classes, smoking & tom foolery, both my older brother and I graduated in the top 10 of our classes.

So when my dad brought us both home copies of Superman #75, it was a watershed moment in our lives. Our dad has always supported us in our endeavors, but at that moment, it felt like it all finally clicked for us. This ones for my dad. Thanks dad**.

I Totally Had This.

And it was totally great.

Probably the reason I am such a well educated and well spoken person today.

The Beginners Gym Attire.

It’s always important to be properly prepared for the gym. For those of you just starting out, there are three things that you absolutely HAVE to have:

1. A gym bag. Unless you’re an unemployed leech on society like myself, you will most likely be going to the gym straight from work, or possibly before work. So you’re gonna need a gym bag for clean clothes, deodorant, etc.

2. A good pair of sneakers. You want good ankle support, and a solid tread.

3. A gym shirt. You’re not working out in Venice Beach in 1979, so you’ll need to have one on. Something simple, that you don’t mind getting sweaty and stinky.

Again, this is for the BEGINNER. You really don’t need much more than that for now, and you certainly aren’t ready to be working out in anything like THIS yet:

You think I’m kidding, but there’s a 300lb roidhead at my gym who wears stuff like this. It’s surreal.

Dinner Time!

Whatever shall I eat.

Perhaps a quick romp down the road in my car to McDonald’s or Taco Bell. Or maybe a phone call to the local pizza shop… or maybe I’ll do the right thing and just make something healthy and delicious at home. Perhaps a recipe from this super healthy super-cookbook…

Green Arrows orange and pineapple shish kabob arrow looks like a pretty tasty snack.

Green Lantern’s peanut butter Kilowog face… not so much.

Better DC Comics Superdog…

Krypto or Ace the Bathound.

It’s a tough call. They’re both pretty cuddly.

Did You Ever Notice…

How baby Superman was always just one or two small steps shy of being a Bizarro?

I mean, I know a baby that can fly and lift the family cow is special, but baby Clark had a tendency to act SPECIAL, if you know what I mean.

Is it any wonder Pa Kent hung himself?
