Top 100 Summer Comics… #79

Crossovers are kind of a pet peeve of mine.

They all start great. Most, I should say. But inevitably, they gunk up the system. Writers are forced to change the flow of their stories to fit in with the event, and usually that leads to some pretty awkward writing.

But sometimes… very rarely… they make for some pretty cool stuff.

#79 – Infinity Gauntlet 3

Like this cover. It’s the comic equivalent of Bam-Bam. There’s nothing subtle about this coolness, it’s smashing you over the head. No nuanced writing – just every kickass Marvel character charging at you.

And as cool as the Infinity Gauntlet was, it led to the Infinity War. Which led to the Infinity Crusade. Gross.

Rob Liefeld: Fraud or Victim?

Is it the artist’s fault if his work is inappropriately lauded? Is it his responsibility to stop the train and say, “hey, everyone, I’m not actually all that great”? Or is he just a man, and as such, given to bouts of self-aggrandizement and even greed?

Here’s the thing: as a kid, I hated this dude. I wasn’t fooled then, and I’m even less convinced now. But as an adult, I understand you gotta get in where you fit in. If people are willing to hand me money, I take it. How am I going to attack a man for acting as I would?

No hard feelings, Mr. Liefeld. You saw your opening and you acted. Kudos. Only one of us has a Levi’s commercial.

Top 100 Summer Comics… #85

Whew. This one came in close to the wire. We ain’t going out like that.

It’s 11:50 pm (central time for those curious of my living situation) and I just completed a long drive to Dallas, TX.

What better way to celebrate such an All-American City than by featuring a classic Captain America caper?

#86 – Captain America 357

Baron Zemo was my favorite villain. At some point, I’ll get into my issues with his unlikely hero turn(?) in Thunderbolts, but this is just exactly why it didn’t work. He was a bad guy’s bad guy. He was just evil. Marvel has never had a whole lot of BAD for the sake of BAD types. Zemo was one of them. This issue was wrapping up a weird Cap as a teen story that I am convinced was just testing the waters for an X-Babies like Teen Cap miniseries, but geniusly setting up a truly great hunt for powerful stones. THIS WORKS PEOPLE. I am somehow compelled like many others by this mystical search for precious gems. No clue why. But be it Indiana Jones or Flintheart Glomgold or Thanos, I want to see/read/etc about evil vs. good in a dire search for power…ful stones. Loved this arc… and the last time Diamondback was actually written well / cool.

1970s Marvel 7-11 Cups.

You may have noticed that we love to post these. That’s because they’re vintage plastic cups covered in lower tier Marvel Universe characters in classic poses, and because Slurpees are totally awesome. So it stands to reason that we’d be all about these Slurpee cups featuring classic Marvel battles…

But there’s just one problem.

None of these auctions bother to show the other side of the cup! Come on! There’s a half-assed attempt with the Mephisto/Silver Surfer cup, but it’s so cruddy a picture that it actually makes a cool looking cup look halfway lame.

At least the seller got it right for the Captain America vs Red Skull cup…

Much, much better. Fill that cup with win.

Let Us All Take Note:

This is a Captain America Mego from the 70s.

A MEXICAN Captain America Mego.

Is there some sort of lesson about unity here?
Perhaps even a moral that could be applied to the current situation in Arizona?

Nah.

I just posted it because it looks crusty and old and cool.

Celebrate our Soldiers…

And the first that comes to mind is obviously Steve Rogers, Captain America himself.

But I/we celebrate him enough, thank you very much.

But maybe ol’ John Walker deserves some attention. Half man, half super-soldier, half dickhead… He still loves our country. He served as Captain America until he got too extreme to wave the flag, so they sent him on the DL level to be a company man in the Avengers. Hell, his last mission sent him to become a part of Alpha Flight, and he still went! So for that, here’s to you U.S. Agent.

Happy Memorial Day!

- I always thought the black outfit was such a cool look. So hard.

- The only thing out of place is the D&D ad on the cover of issue #1 – John Walker would give any Dungeon Master a swift kick in the ass.

Setting the bar: Avengers cover art

For a long time, Marvel was dominated by their merry mutants. Before that however, the Avengers were the major force. And now, they’ve regained their throne.

But as good as the series is now, without hindsight it will be impossible to really judge how great their reign has been. Looking back at the Avengers run of the early and mid 1970′s shows that they had their highs and lows, but all in all, set a new tone for art, creativity, and fast paced action. As a nod to that, I picked a handful of covers from the series between issue #50 and #100 to see just how great, ridiculous, terrible and downright perfect comic covers can be. Enjoy.

Avengers #93

aka… Thor smash Fantastic Four. Cap approve.

Avengers #71

aka… this “A” stands for wackass shield!

Avengers #57

Classic.

Avengers #78

“Okay hear me out. His name is Man-Ape and he’s totally NOT offensive.”

Avengers #98

Whoever loses ends up with War-Hawk’s facial hair styling. Fight hard, brave soldiers.

Avengers #89

Classic x2.

Avengers #63

Underrated cover. Why isn’t this on a t-shirt yet?

Avengers #80

aka… Thor stupid.

Avengers #77

There are definitely far too few comics discussing super-heroes hired for manual labor these days.

Avengers #83

Classic x3. Fitting that Mr.BeathisWife is the main dude being womp’d on here.

Jae Lee reminding me of R. Pettibon ?

While I would almost never before or after have thought this…

After seeing the below original art I was forced to compare this Jae Lee page to Raymond Pettibon art.

As a big fan of Mr. Pettibon’s stark and decidedly disturbing style, I take that as no light comparison. But when I see the creepiness and thin lines of this page – I see it. Look at each panel on it’s own, save the Cap panel, and with a deranged quote they are instantly worthy of being thrown on a Black Flag album. Kudos. This one is going soon, but at a VERY reasonable price. Might have to throw a bid in…

Classic Captain America

Hey, did you catch the Captain America shield in Iron Man 2???

Wait, everyone did. They practically hurled it at you.

So for the one or two per 1000 who missed it, I think that Iron Man 2 will be in the theater for a minute, so go back and see it. For everyone else, feast your eyes on some Jack Kirby / Joe Simon era CAPTAIN AMERICA original art. Seller says he will have some other stuff worth your time…

and I’d say after checking this auction I would agree. Wow. 1941. Timely Comics. Was Stan Lee even an intern yet?

John Byrne + Man-Thing + Captain America

Excelsior.

From the same seller with the JR JR Iron Man piece below, this sketch was just too good NOT to post.

Getting a little bit more attention, but deserving. What a collection of characters. I mean, it’s not everyday you get the chance to own a piece of original art featuring VICTORIUS.

I love how pathetic the Thing looks in the sketch – like a giant crying rock baby. Make sure to read the word bubble in the actual cover below, priceless.
