Classic Captain America

Hey, did you catch the Captain America shield in Iron Man 2???

Wait, everyone did. They practically hurled it at you.

So for the one or two per 1000 who missed it, I think that Iron Man 2 will be in the theater for a minute, so go back and see it. For everyone else, feast your eyes on some Jack Kirby / Joe Simon era CAPTAIN AMERICA original art. Seller says he will have some other stuff worth your time…

and I’d say after checking this auction I would agree. Wow. 1941. Timely Comics. Was Stan Lee even an intern yet?

Even legends have off days…

No one’s perfect.

Everyone has spilled their drink. Made a mistake at work. Cut an appendage doing something foolish.

I think that I would liken Stan Lee and Gene Colan’s off day being most alike to severing a finger while trying to cut a sandwich…

The character was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in Daredevil #25 (February, 1967), and was basically a criminal in a frog costume with springs under his shoes. However, his later improved suit and superior athletic abilities made him a serious fighter.

So what have we learned? Sometimes you come up with Spider-Man. Sometimes, Leap Frog. The greatest success is merely just a tweaked version of the largest failure. Keep the faith.

So THAT’s why Batman doesn’t like Superman

The 60′s were a great and interesting time for the superstars of DC Comics.

Given that DC and it’s Super Powers predate most of the Marvel U, while The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man were just getting their training wheels, Superman and Batman had already been through the gauntlet.

Hokey live action tv shows? Got ‘em. Marvel wouldn’t get their firsts until Lou Ferrigno’s HULK and the Spider-Man show in the 70′s.

But the comics of DC in the 60′s were a treat. Creators were forced to get pretty creative.

And by creative I mean zany.

Even Les Stroud couldn’t survive these issues…

Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane.

No, that’s the name of the comic. I somehow feel like a post-feminist society would take some issue with quite a few things in these comics. Color me curious, but somehow I feel as though the recycled themes of 1) fighting over men 2) being sad about marrying the wrong guy 3) literal “cat fights” wouldn’t really jive with the themes of gender equality.

That said – I’m happy we are living in a world where we can look at these issues and laugh at what was the accepted norms of the time, shake our heads and realize things have changed for the better. And also, acknowledge that I doubt these ideas were really bringing women into comic reading at that time either. Who was buying these?!?!

Personal favorite. As my best friend would say, “Wurt?”

Everything just reads a little crooked here. The image, performing super-feats together… I dunno.

Women fighting over men, looking at wedding rings. PS – Superman brings steaks to the beach bbq. Obviously he’s an alien.

In this issue: Lois Lane kissing all of the members of the Justice League. Another girl is jealous. W O W.

Okay, I laughed at this one when I saw “Superpussycat formerly Superman.”

I am legitimately VERY interested in who’s saying what on this cover. If anyone knows, holler at me. Also, the statement by Superman is amazing. Again, to quote, “Wurt.”

I think I can wear this.

I was going to complain about how I wished there were cool comic book shirts like this when I was a kid.

I think that often, but it has yet to stop me from owning at least three but no more than five comic book related tees. (One of the counted is an Infinity Gauntlet thermal shirt, so not a tee, but something I feel warmth in my heart over owning.)

But then I thought about it. Jack Kirby. Thor. Iconic image. Tight design.

Next time I come across one of these in my size I will be purchasing it. I think it says that you like comics, but not in an ironic way, and that clearly you are an adult but hey… it’s a t-shirt. Dig it.

Ape must not kill Ape

Considering this movie produced an onslaught of mediocre to bad follow ups, I argue this.

The original was just that good. Charlton Heston at (near) his best, and pretty good adaptation for the time period. Sci-fi fans and comic nerds alike should rejoice on this classic.

The novel upon which the movie is based, not, as the description details, the “tie in” to the movie.

Krull, aka the hardest, aka the wisdom. Love this dude.

P.S. – “WHO LET THE APES OUT?”

Super… Dog?

Ironically, a sign of true “brand” greatness is the expansion into weird secondary content and characters.

How else can you explain this fellow?

Somewhere along the lines of making this toy, KRYPTO the SuperDog hit some heat and started to look more and more like Scooby-Doo. I can’t even start on BatDog. Honestly, the only thing Krypto brings is a kryptonite to Superman credibility.

For example, can anyone explain what this toy does? It honestly makes me think “annoyometer.” It’s bizarre, buy it maybe, but don’t look at it for too long, it’s like looking at the sun.

And though this is small redemption, here is a classic Superman cover that also happens to be Krypto’s second appearance. I love this era, where frequently Superman stories were just bizarre. I feel as though any notable modern Superman writer nods at this, certainly both John Byrne and Grant Morrison did.

“The police are treating me like an outlaw! WHY?”

Classic.

Merry Marvel Promotional… 7″ vinyl record?!?

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… vinyl was it.

There were books on vinyl. Soundtracks. Motivational records. Spoken word. Anything. You name it… it was on vinyl.

Here is what would appear to be a very rare promo only single that features the hit single The Merry Marching Marvel Society. Wow. Supposedly comes from the wife of a Marvel higher up? Very interesting, never seen one of these before.

Words

Is that a Vietnam crack, Thor?

I don’t know what they were on at the merry Marvel merchandising department in 1967, but whatever it was I bet they got it from the hippies. Which kind of makes the Thor sticker threatening “Charlie” a little weird.
