Let’s start Real Life Heroes Week with The Last Gladiator, Evel Kinevel. This guy defied common sense for a long time and made serious money by (semi)willfully eating pavement at 80mph. Do you want your kid following Evel’s path? No. But are you grateful that there’s always going to be a wingnut with a willingness to self-injure out there looking to entertain you? Hell yes.

Here’s a pretty alright looking Evel Kinevel license book from Marvel. It might even be a good read. Buy it and celebrate the life of a madman.

Super Bowl Inspired Super Heroics

Well, here’s an obvious one for today. Not terribly creative on my part, but then again it wasn’t terribly creative on Marvel’s part either. What sort of licensing tie-in is this? Fans of comics may also enjoy sports! Alright. Where’s Soccer-Man?

This is more like it. A Ken Kelly EERIE cover in poster size. Look at that salesmanship. That’s the sort of hook that makes you pick up a title. HOW DID IT MEAN DEATH TO THOUSANDS? I WANT TO KNOW.

The Post-Hero Moral Dilemma

Is anything sacrosanct? Is there any single idea that cannot be touched upon out of reverence for the source material? That’s the subtext of all these Watchmen arguments floating around the internet today. In case you missed it, DC announced a series of books titled BEFORE WATCHMEN. As you might imagine, some fans are up in arms while others advocate for DC’s right to do whatever they want with those characters, and group advocating the third position of “I just want to read good comics!” has started to enter the melee.

My position? WHO CARES. Not “who cares about my position” rather, “Who cares” is my position. Give me new stories. Give me new characters. Don’t tell me what happened before. Tell me what happens after. Make it exciting and unexpected. Thrill me, dammit.

Back In the Days When ANYTHING Sold

On what Earth would this product have been picked up, investigated, and purchased? What was the state of the comic book industry when this totally worthless item could be relied upon to sell even enough to justify printing it? It’s a trivia comic from a small publisher. Trivia about characters in that small publisher’s universe. Whoa.

I want you to buy this. I want you to pick this up, read it, and come to me with answers. Why does this exist? Should trees be angry? Who is that character depicted in silhouette on the cover?

Why is this piece of original art by the impossibly great Sean Philips, featuring incredibly popular characters, not going for lots of money? That’s for the seller to worry about. All you need concern yourself with is the purchase, mounting, and framing of this beautiful thing. Created as the recap page in an issue of the Kingpin series, this is just a solidly designed piece that any fan of the characters or artist should consider a steal at this price. Buy!

So this might be a weird thing to admit on a site made for collectors of things, but I don’t care about signatures. I just don’t. Unless it comes with some original art, or you got it signed on your chest, I don’t see what the big deal is. Yet here’s an Ebay auction based on a writer’s signature. Why do I pump this? Because Jeff Parker’s Thunderbolts is one of the most under-discussed books on the racks. It’s not playing with huge characters so it gets passed over by a lot of people. But it’s as solid a hero (word used liberally here as the series follows convicts) book as they come. It’s worth noting that things actually change in the series and the characters you love aren’t coddled by the writer. It’s refreshing and fun. Give this book a chance, and why not make it a signed chance?

YOU KNOW I LOVE PRODUCTION MATERIALS! Here’s a color guide for an early-80s issue of Spectacular Spider-Man. This sort of stuff thrills me because it celebrates the whole process of comic making. Which I understand is probably as nerdy as someone collecting lighting rigs from films they love, but whatever. It’s that sort of stuff that keeps the lights on at Ebay. Bizarre collecting. Check this piece out and tell me it’s not perfect for framing.
