The Way of the Animal Samurai

Recently I posted about Sergio Aragones and his most famous creation, Groo. Now let’s talk about an equally unique force in creator-owned publishing, Stan Sakai and his work, Usagi Yojimbo. For years, Stan has quietly been releasing one of comicdom’s greatest epics.

His work is exactly what people claim they want in comics: well-contained arcs that provide perfect jumping-off points for the entire series. Yet, Usagi relies on a cult following (with occasionally swells amid surrounding trends, only to fall back to its baseline each time). Why? Because comic fans are lying-ass bullshitters who really want the same product wrapped in different packaging.

Here’s a framed piece of original art from Stan. And it’s going for dirt-cheap. MEANWHILE, SOMEWHERE ON EBAY SOME FOOL IS PAYING TOP DOLLAR FOR ART FROM A CREATOR WITH ONE-TENTH THE TALENT. GET WITH THE REAL, PEOPLE.
